Irish Flag Shot

IRISH FLAG SHOT

Good evening everyone! Although it is not close to St. Patrick's Day, I might as well present you with probably the most well-known shot during that time, the Irish Flag Shot. It is a layered drink, similar to the B-52, Sprinbokkie, Brain Hemorrhage or so and most likely being drunk, as mentioned before, on St. Paddy's.

If you check the ingredients below, you'll notice it almost 100% identical to the B-52 version with two "twists":
  • 1/3 part cremè de menthe (green)
  • 1/3 part baileys
  • 1/3 part gran marnier
Layer in the given order but don't light it up (like you would a B-52). Shoot! As for the visual part, looks like the Irish Flag sideways. Taste-wise? Well the biggest problem with layered shots in general is that they tend to taste to whatever is the last liqueur in the glass. These shots have that visual aspect to them and that's pretty much it. For instance, this shot tastes pretty much like green peppermint liqueur with a hint of baileys and orange-cognac. Of course, on the correct theme day these are naturally more fun to drink. Not necessarily better tasting, just more fun :)

Mai Tai

MAI TAI

Deliciousness in a nutshell double old fashioned
Hello again everyone! First of all...FINALLY, FINALLY I made the truly classic cocktail Mai Tai I've wanted to do...for over a year now! Thanks to my sister who brought me a bottle of orgeat syrup (or orgeat) I finally didn't let me dreams just be dreams and just did it.

When I went to Bremen last summer I got to taste two Mai Tais (okay just a sip from the first one); now I had the ingredients I needed to make my own! A big shout out to CHOW's Mai Tai recipe!
  • 20 ml fresh lime juice (½ lime pressed)
  • 7.5 ml rock candy syrup (2:1 sugar syrup where 2 parts of sugar and 1 part water)
  • 7.5 ml orgeat syrup
  • 15 ml gran marnier
  • 35 ml El Dorado 15yo rum
  • 25 ml Appleton Estate 12yo rum
One point at the start. Orange Curacao is called for in this drink; I substituted it with Gran Marnier because "Grand Marnier is a blend of cognac and triple sec, so although it's not a traditional curaçao, it's a similar product. Cointreau, on the other hand, is straight up a triple sec."

I had no curacao so I did that one change. Shake everything with crushed ice and pour the content into a double old fashioned glass (or a tiki mug if you have one). Use the pressed lime shell as a garnish and add a sprig of mint (you've slapped before to express the essential oils) to make it look "like an island and a palm tree".

No comments needed.

Batiste

BATISTE

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you've all had a great (last) year. I must say the year 2013 has been a life changing one. Not only did I get a job from the restaurant business in September, among other things I got to visit my brother & his family in Germany and spend Christmas there.

But without further ado, the first cocktail for the year 2014 shall be a Batiste! The recipe varies just a teeny bit depending on your source:
  • 2 parts rum (blanco or aged)
  • 1 part gran marnier
I used aged rum in this one, I believe it gives a more complex flavor overall. My measures were 4/2 cl respectively. Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. No garnish needed. Apparently adding juice from ½ a lime makes this a Prince George.

Taste-wise, not a magnificent cocktail. Having tried the Batiste, I really would like make this again with the lime juice. The cocktail is complex but it's missing that oompf. I didn't get a "wow!" sensation from it. Nonetheless, it's a really easy one to make.

B-52

B-52

If you look closely, you can see the blue fire.

Merry Christmas everyone! I'm back with my wife from Germany, where we spent Christmas with my sister, my brother and his family. It was a good holiday, no, it was an amazing holiday for us. Now that the celebrations are "over", it's time to start a the upcoming New Year's with a blazing shooter! I introduce you to the well-known B-52!
  • 1/3 shot Kahluá (coffee liqueur)
  • 1/3 shot Baileys (cream liqueur)
  • 1/3 shot Gran Marnier (triple sec)
  • (matches and fire safety)
Layer the ingredients as mentioned (coffee, cream, triple sec) and optionally light the shooter on fire. You can either use a short straw or just blow out the fire and then shoot!

Regrettably, this cocktail...has really more hype than flavor. I...just couldn't get much out of this! It's a pretty shooter nonetheless and if you're feel like blazing up a few drinks, consider this OR the Kiki.
